IMAP is the recommended account type because messages and folders remain on the server and synchronise across devices.
Applies to: SiteWorx hosting mailboxes
Compare the protocols
| Protocol | Secure port | Behaviour | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMAP | 993 | Synchronises server folders, read state, sent items and deletions. | Use for normal desktop, mobile and multi-device access. |
| POP3 | 995 | Downloads inbox messages; software may remove or retain the server copy depending on its settings. | Use only for a deliberate legacy workflow with a tested backup plan. |
Choose safely
- Choose IMAP when more than one device or webmail will access the mailbox.
- Do not change an existing POP account to IMAP without first checking where the only copy of older mail is stored.
- Before removing or recreating an account, export any locally stored folders that are not visible in webmail.
- Mailbox and hosting storage limits still apply to IMAP mail retained on the server.
