Track a domain transfer and resolve a pending transfer Print

  • domain, transfer
  • 0

A transfer can wait for approval, lose time because of an invalid code or fail because the domain is not eligible.

Applies to: Domain transfers, renewals and expiry

Domain transfers vary by registry. UK domains normally use a registrar-tag process, while many generic domains use an authorisation code and transfer lock. A transfer changes the registrar; it does not move website files or email by itself.

Before you start

  • Have the domain, gaining registrar order and transfer submission time available.

Work through these checks

  1. Check the gaining registrar's transfer status and exact message first; it is the system requesting the move.
  2. Review the registrant email for an approval or confirmation message and verify that it is genuine before acting.
  3. Confirm the domain remains unlocked, the Auth-Code has not changed and the registrant contact email is working.
  4. Check registry statuses and eligibility dates when the transfer is rejected or repeatedly returns to pending.
  5. Do not change nameservers solely to make the transfer complete. DNS and registrar transfer are separate processes.
  6. After completion, confirm the expiry date, nameservers, registrant details and auto-renew setting at the new registrar.

Confirm the result

  • The registrar of record changes while the intended nameservers and live services remain correct.
