Find and protect a domain transfer authorisation code Print

Many generic domains require an EPP or Auth-Code to approve a registrar transfer; treat it like a temporary secret.

Applies to: Domain transfers, renewals and expiry

Domain transfers vary by registry. UK domains normally use a registrar-tag process, while many generic domains use an authorisation code and transfer lock. A transfer changes the registrar; it does not move website files or email by itself.

Before you start

  • Confirm that the domain extension uses an authorisation-code transfer process.
  • Ensure the domain is eligible and unlocked where required.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the domain management page and look for EPP Code, Auth Code or Transfer Code. Some registries send the code to the registrant email rather than displaying it.
  2. Request a fresh code if the existing one is old or has already been shared with a registrar that will not be used.
  3. Copy it directly into the gaining registrar's secure transfer form. Do not place the code in a public message, screenshot or unrelated ticket.
  4. Keep the registrant email working so transfer approval and status notices can be received.
  5. After the transfer completes or is abandoned, rotate the code where the registrar permits and re-enable the transfer lock.

Confirm the result

  • The gaining registrar accepts the code and the transfer enters a trackable pending or completed state.

Common problems

SymptomLikely causeWhat to do
The code is rejected. It is mistyped, expired, was regenerated, or belongs to a different domain.Request a new code, copy without spaces and restart only the affected transfer.
No code option is shown. The extension may use a registrar tag, account push or registry-specific process.Check the extension's transfer guide or open a domain ticket.

Important notes

  • An Auth-Code authorises a registrar transfer; it does not give access to website files, email or DNS hosting.
