Understand domain transfer locks and 60-day restrictions Print

A transfer can be blocked by registrar locks, recent registration or transfer, or a change-of-registrant restriction.

Applies to: Domain transfers, renewals and expiry

Domain transfers vary by registry. UK domains normally use a registrar-tag process, while many generic domains use an authorisation code and transfer lock. A transfer changes the registrar; it does not move website files or email by itself.

Key information

Registrar lockOften shown as clientTransferProhibited and normally removable through the current registrar when no other restriction applies.
New registrationMany generic domains cannot transfer to another registrar during the first 60 days.
Recent transferA further registrar transfer may be restricted for 60 days after completion.
Change of registrantA material registrant change may trigger a separate 60-day lock unless an allowed opt-out or exception applied.

Before you start

  • Confirm that you are authorised to manage the domain and that the registrant contact details are current.
  • Record the current registrar, expiry date, transfer lock or UK registrar tag, nameservers and active services.

How to use this service

  1. Check the domain status in the current registrar and a registry lookup, noting any clientTransferProhibited or server-level status.
  2. Confirm the creation date, last transfer date and any recent registrant-contact change.
  3. Remove only the ordinary registrar transfer lock when the transfer is authorised and all other checks are complete.
  4. Request the Auth-Code and initiate the transfer with the gaining registrar.
  5. Re-lock the domain if the transfer is cancelled, rejected or no longer required.

Confirm the result

  • The domain is unlocked only for the planned transfer window and no registry-level restriction remains unexplained.

Common problems

SymptomLikely causeWhat to do
The lock switch is disabled.A registry restriction, dispute, expiry state or account-security hold prevents removal.Open a domain ticket with the status values and reason for transfer.
The transfer remains prohibited after unlocking.Cached lookup data or a second registry status is involved.Wait briefly, refresh the authoritative status and check the 60-day dates.
